Ciri khusus ikan Patin jenis ini mempunyai ekor yang tipis runcing. Ikan Patin ini tergolong predator terhadap ikan-ikan lain. Berbeda dengan jenis patin-patin lain yang lebih bersifat herbivora dan omnivora.

Ikan Patin Sungai Mahakam di kabupaten Kutai Kartanegara ini oleh penduduk setempat disebut Ikan Patin Kuning atau Patin Pulutan. Untuk saat ini rekor tangkapan terberat jenis ikan ini seberat 31 kg yang di tangkap oleh Aji Rijani dari Tenggarong Seberang.
Ikan ini mengeluarkan lendir yang berasal dari sumber kelenjar yang terletak di belakang kedua pantingnya.

Biology :
Small specimens (smaller than 15 cm) were collected in brackish water in the river delta, while larger ones were found in the upper part. No vegetation were found at the banks, relatively strong current, deep and turbid water. An omnivorous fish, feeding mainly on insects and small fruits. Spawning periods unknown (Ref. 46915).

Biology :
Found in large rivers and estuaries (Ref. 4833). Occurs in high estuary (freshwater tidal zone) as juveniles, moving to brackish water as sub-adults, and finally as adults to river mouths and inshore areas (Ref. 12693). Longevity given as 10 years (Ref. 2686) but appears too low. Feeds on snails, other mollusks (Ref. 1479) and plants (Ref. 4833). Reared for consumption in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam; excellent food fish with very white fine grained sweet flesh (Ref 2686). Marketed fresh (Ref. 12693).

Short description
Dorsal spines (total): 1; Dorsal soft rays (total): 6 - 7; Anal soft rays: 35 - 42; Vertebrae: 46 - 48. Can be differentiated from all its congeners by the following combination of characters: length of anal-fin base 34.5-38.2% SL, length of caudal peduncle 12.9-15.3% SL, head length 20.8-22.8% SL, eye diameter 16.1-21.2% HL, 9-12 gill rakers on the first branchial arch (Ref. 39387). Snout relatively elongate, conical in dorsal view; mouth narrow, with 20-25 times in SL; posterior nostril midway between anterior nostril and eye (Ref. 43281).

Biology :
Occurs in permanent river channels and does not move into flooded areas. Migrates upstream when water levels begin to rise at the beginning of the flood season and moves downstream as the water clears at the end of the flood season. Feeds predominantly on bivalves.

Dorsal fin advanced in position, with a strongly serrated spine; pectoral spines as long as or slightly longer than dorsal spine, strong, denticulated along their inner edge; pelvic fins small; anal fin low, long; adipose fin very small (Ref. 4792). Single, oval-shaped patch of teeth on each side of palate; eye large (Ref. 12693).

Biology :
Occur in large and medium-sized rivers (Ref. 12693). Found in rapids and in deeper slower reaches (Ref. 37771). Common in the middle Mekong before the flood season where it is found in the lower reaches of tributary streams along with most of the cyprinids which would be found in the main stream of the Mekong when the water is clear. Feeds on terrestrial and aquatic insects along with small amounts of plant matter. Marketed fresh (Ref. 12693).

Ikan Patin jenis ini masih banyak terdapat di pedalaman sungai-sungai Kalimantan, juga terdapat di sungai-sungai Sumatera dan Jawa, seperti di Bengawan Solo bagian hilir. Di Jawa , orang menamakan ikan patin ini, dengan nama ikan Jendil atau Wagal. Ukuran tubuh patin jenis ini lebih kecil di banding dengan ikan Patin yang lain. Ukuran maksimal ikan ini maksimal mencapai panjang 40 cm. Sedangkan yang biasa tertangkap pemancing biasanya berukuran sekitar antara 20 - 30-an cm untuk ukuran ikan dewasa.

Swim bladder 3-chambered, extending to above anal-fin base (Ref. 46915). Dorsum dark blue to blue-black; 3-4 lowermost principal caudal rays white; vomerine teeth appearing as 2 joined patches in juveniles (Ref. 12693); vomerine teeth united into quadrangular patch, 1.5 times broader than long, not confluent with palatine teeth patch; anal fin base elongate, its length 3.1-3.6 times in SL; dorsal and pectoral fin spines slender; snout blunt (Ref. 43281).

Bilology :
Found in lakes and rivers (Ref. 56749). Occurs in estuaries and lower reaches but has also been observed in the upper reaches during the rainy season. Species is omnivorous with a tendency to opportunism (Ref. 46915).
